A Tribute to Canadian Folk Student Composition Contest

With official sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Toronto, Penthelia Singers is pleased to announce our first ever student composers’ writing contest for a new original choral arrangement of a Canadian folk song for women’s voices.

Student composers are invited to enter their original arrangements by December 31st, 2013. The winning composer will receive a grand prize of $500, and a debut performance of your piece at Penthelia Singers’ “Tribute to Canadian Folk” concert in June 2014.

To Enter
Please submit an original arrangement of a Canadian folk song for women’s voices. The song and text must be in the public domain, that is, not currently under copyright OR under copyright, but with written permission of the copyright holder.

Submissions must include a completed entry form (see Penthelia Arranging Contest 2013/14). Submission may be sent as an attachment in PDF format by email to pentheliasingers@yahoo.ca or a hard copy mailed to:

Eligibility
Entrants for this contest must be enrolled in a post secondary education program (college or university) in Canada for September 2013 and be under 30 years of age.

Grand Prize
$500 + debut performance of your piece at our concert in June 2014

Deadline
The deadline for submissions is December 31st, 2013. Winners will be contacted by March, 2014.

Judging
Arrangements will be judged by a committee selected by the Penthelia Board of Directors.
Judges are looking for:
● a folk song originally written by a Canadian
● appropriate range for women’s voices
● 2, 3 or 4 part harmony
● instrumental accompaniment is optional (piano preferred for ease of performance)
● 2­5 minute timing for the piece
● the musical arrangement highlights and complements the meaning of the song

Ownership
By entering this contest entrants agree to giving Penthelia Singers the right to keep a set of music to perform live in future concerts. The works of the first place winner and any honourable mentions will be performed at Penthelia’s “Tribute to Canadian Folk” concert in June 2014. The entrant retains ownership of their work.
